March is Arts in the Schools Month and for the Greene County School District, there are lots of opportunities for students.
Greene County Activities Director Dave Wright says the high school has several fine arts including choir, band, drama, and speech, along with the regular art classes that recently involved painting a ram mural near the main entrance in the commons area.
Wright notes that when he was in school, he was involved in sports and fine arts, and he encourages students to do both during their high school years. He says fine arts provides a good range of activities for students to be engaged.
“And I think the fine arts kind of give people an outlet to do things or try things that they maybe hadn’t done before, (or) meet different people. You know, you go to these speech contest or music contest and it’s a very supportive community, I guess you would say. An opportunity to meet kids from other schools in a situation that’s not intensively competitive, I mean they’re competing to a degree but they’re supporting one another as well.”
To highlight the individuals who have excelled in the fine arts, the second annual Fine Arts Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on May 6th at the high school auditorium.
