It’s the second day of Severe Weather Awareness Week, and Tuesday’s highlight is about tornado safety.

Dallas County Emergency Management Director AJ Seely says that tornadoes are dangerous due to being able to form quickly without warning. Seely stresses that in the event of a tornado, people should seek shelter in either the basement or an interior room of a home on the lowest floor possible. He reminds residents to double check these spaces for availability.

“It’s important to recheck those spots, make sure that all of your family members can fit in there. Maybe you have a portable phone charger or something where you can go down there and receive continuous information if you’re sheltering from a severe storm.”

Seely mentions that the weather service team is excellent at communicating when a tornado is approaching the area. However, with weather’s unpredictability, a tornado can form before an alert is issued to the public.
