A bridge replacement project in southern Greene County is set to begin on Monday.

Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss says the bridge over Snake Creek on 280th Street, north of Rippey and just off County Road P-46, will start on March 25th and last for about seven weeks, weather permitting. Weiss points out that while the contractor, Herberger Construction Company is working, there will be a temporary road closure.

“We will have one lane of (County Road) P-46 shutdown, the northbound lane will be shut down because the bridge is so close to the highway. We’re going to have stoplights up just blocking that northbound lane. We use those and they work really well for the public when they come up to them. There are actually going to be three stoplights, there’s going to be one that comes from gravel road also, just to the west.”  

Weiss explains that the bridge will also be widened to 30-feet and six-inches, instead of the typical 24-feet and six-inches. He says this is because of the bridge’s proximity to Iowa Highway 144 and with turning traffic onto the gravel road. 

This project was approved by the Greene County Board of Supervisors for $480,692 with federal funds that will be reimbursed once the project is paid for upfront.
