An organization recently started back up at Greene County Middle School and there’s been quite an interest from students.

Kristen Wright is a sixth grade teacher and is one of the sponsors for Student Council, which she tells Raccoon Valley Radio hasn’t been around for a couple of years, after Karen Shannon started the program when she was a guidance counselor before she became the high school principal. She points out that Student Council officially started after winter break and over 30 students are involved from fifth through eighth grades.

“That logistically was kind of tricky because we said, ‘That’s a lot of voices.’ There are actually two other sponsors with myself, so Whitney Hoyle and Jennifer Powers are also sponsors. So we decided to split into kind of made one group that’s focusing on like school spirit stuff (that’s) the group I work with. Then the group that meets in the afternoon is more focused on service opportunities and other things that we can do in the community.”

Sixth grader Annabelle Sanders recalls taking a trip to Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Valentine’s Day as one of my favorite activities with the Student Council.

“I thought it was really nice and cool because they don’t get that many visitors. It’s nice to just hang out with people older than you and hear their stories about when they were a child.”

Fifth grader Emma Gliem adds that there is a dance their group has been planning that is this Saturday for all middle school students with a neon color theme and the Shuffle Couple will be the deejay.
