Track & Field has been a sport with a good share of State Meet experience and success in recent seasons at Greene County High School. However, there’s a limited amount of State Meet experience as the girls and boys teams enter their 2024 seasons.
Derek Merk is the head coach of the Rams and his only returning State qualifier is sophomore Kaycee Pittman. She was 23rd in 2023 in the Class 2A 800 meter run. Pittman came on strong in the latter stages of her freshman campaign to run a personal best time of 2:26.62 at State. Pittman also ran a leg on the 2023 seventh place 4 x 400 meter relay, and was the only runner on that quartet that wasn’t a senior.
Boys’ head coach Chad Morton has three relay runners back from last season in the 2A Distance Medley that was 21st at State. Junior Camden Strennen ran a 200 meter leg with junior Nic Stream on the 400 and sophomore Drew Wolterman on the 800 meter anchor leg.
Numbers are strong for both teams with more than 30 girls and close to 50 boys. The indoor portion of the 2024 season begins next week with a limited number of athletes taking part in meets inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls and the Lied Student Recreation Center in Ames.
