February is National Heart Month and Community Health Administrator at Dallas County Health Department highlights some statistics about heart disease.
Community Health Administrator Abigail Chihak clarifies that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Although she does note that heart disease is mostly found in older adults, she explains that any age is susceptible. She uses statistics from 2022 pertaining to how heart disease affected Dallas County.
“For every 10,000 people in the county, almost 15 deaths related to heart disease occurred. So that’s, if you do the math, real roughly, about 150 people a year just in Dallas County that are dying from heart disease.”
Chihak pinpoints other contributors that cause heart disease that’s identifiable in the younger generation of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity.
