The state of Iowa is once again in the middle of dangerously cold temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service today and tomorrow’s highs are in the single digits, with wind chills as low as -20 to -35 degrees below zero. NWS Lead Meteorologist Brooke Hagenhoff tells Raccoon Valley Radio when it gets that cold, lots of things are not as effective such as salt on the roadways and vehicles also show more signs of struggling. She talks about the additional dangers of the extreme cold temperatures.

“It also means that if you’re driving around and you become stranded the danger is significantly higher because being stranded whenever it’s 25 degrees out, well that’s dangerous (but) being stranded when it’s -25 degrees out is much more dangerous as far as starting to worry about hypothermia and frostbite for those that do get stranded.”

However, temperatures begin to warm back up heading into next week. The National Weather Service is reporting highs are in the mid to upper 30s all next week.
