Some Greene County 4-H’ers recently competed in a swine competition.

The Iowa Pork Producers Association co-sponsored the Youth Swine Judging Contest, where there were 517 students that competed in the senior and junior divisions. Greene County 4-H sent two groups in the junior division and Greene County 4-H #2 earned second place, while Buena Vista 4-H was first place. The Greene County 4-H #1 team was fifth place and each of the top five teams also received a plaque. According to Greene County Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway, team two was Paisley and Stella Launter, Chloe Julick, and Lauren Oakes. Additionally, Breanna Pope was first place for individuals in the junior divisions and Paisley Lautner was second.

The contest was judged on meat quality and knowledge of commercial pork, as well as acknowledging the four classes of hogs, scoring a keep-cull gilt class, doing a live carcass evaluation and then ranking them on carcass value.

Eldon C Stutsman Incorporated, Iowa State University, the Pork Checkoff, Producers Livestock and Smithfield Foods also co-sponsored the event that was held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
