Johnathan Thompson of Grand Junction wrestled Friday and Saturday in Tulsa, OK at the World of Wrestling Kickoff Classic and handily won his weight class. One of the nation’s top pound-for-pound youth wrestlers was in the 73 lbs. 12 and under weight class, he went 6-0, trailed just once over the two day tourney, and rolled up a ton of points.
In three matches on Friday, Thompson won in the round of 64 by a technical fall, by a fall in the round of 32, and another technical fall in the round of 16. His first match on Saturday saw the Greene County seventh grader trailed early by a 4-0 score. He recovered to take a lead, then won by fall in the second period of the quarterfinals. Thompson notched another win by technical fall in the semifinals, setting up a finals match against Nelson Villafane of Pennsylvania. The Iowan rolled to a 21-7 major decision to take the title.
