Sebolt Wrestling Academy of Jefferson is no stranger to championship level individuals from Greene County. Look no further than 2023 Greene County High School graduates Kale Petersen, a three-time Iowa High School State Champion who finished second in July at the Fargo (ND) Nationals in the freestyle division, and McKinley Robbins, a four time Iowa State Tournament finalist and two-time Champion. Both are NCAA Division I wrestlers, Petersen at Iowa and Robbins at Oregon State.
Could the next great wrestler from Greene County be seventh grader Johnathan Thompson? He’s won more than 50 straight matches over the past year without a loss while wrestling a strong schedule including regional and national tournaments. Thompson won the 77 lbs. division in the 7th-8th grade division of the Brian Keck Memorial Tournament in Des Moines last weekend at the Iowa Events Center, going 5-0. The event featured wrestlers from a number of states. Thompson had a first period fall, major decisions of 10-2 and 10-0, a 5-2 decision in the semifinals, followed by a 10-5 Championship match victory.
