Dallas Center-Grimes’ Piper Messerly has impressed many in her freshman year as a cross country runner, but there is still one more meet left.

Messerly as a freshman with the Mustang cross country team has consistently ran a 5k time under 19 minutes and she is currently ranked sixth in Class 4a by Iowarunjumpthrow. She has overperformed her experience in the biggest meets including a first place finish in the Little Hawkeye Conference Meet and a third place finish in the state qualifying meet. Head Coach Justin Droppert says that he’s been blown away with  Messerly’s mental toughness and ability to find the best way to run a race as a freshman.

She’s just been impressed with. How mentally tough she is and how smart she races. For a freshman, that’s just kind of been really impressive. She knows when to go, when to fall in line and kind of let somebody else do the work. And so that has taken her a long ways and you know, and just she’s got obviously some ability there.”

The Mustang girls cross country team dominated their district meet and placed first overall. They will race at 10:30am in Fort Dodge for the Class 4a State Tournament Meet.
