A lesser known piece of information about October that may be overlooked is that it’s National High School Activities Month.
West Central Valley Activities Director Jim Lindsay says that school-based activities are the lifeline and lifeblood of any high school. He explains that it gives the students something to do outside of classes that can help give them a sense of belonging. Lindsay tells Raccoon Valley Radio the benefit of having activities for students to participate in.
“It just gives the kids a wide variety of things to do and different interests, and we have things for the kids with different interests to do and take part in and things like that. So it’s always good to have a wide variety, especially at a smaller school. Sometimes that’s tough to have much of a wide variety.”
Lindsay mentions that at West Central Valley High School, extra-curricular activities include sports like football, volleyball, wrestling, basketball and soccer, and non-sports activities like FFA, band and choir. He adds that at the school, most of the students who participate in any activity, tend to participate in multiple activities, and that there aren’t many who chose to only participate and specialize in any one thing.
