US Congress was able to pass a temporary spending bill to avert a partial federal government shutdown at the end of September.
US Senator Chuck Grassley is happy that the Senate and House were able to pass a bill to keep the full federal government functioning for 45 days, but he isn’t as thrilled about the situation with Representative Kevin McCarthy being removed as House Speaker following the funding bill approval.
“We’re losing a whole nother week or maybe ten days of that 45 days and that’s the horrific situation we’re in. That important time to get the 12 appropriation bills passed as opposed to waiting until Christmas to pass one omnibus, great, giant appropriation bill, and the 12 bills is the way it should be done. It’s just making it more impossible to get that done in these 45 days.”
Grassley adds the House Speaker is more of an issue than the few House Republicans that held out from voting on the funding bill in the waning moments before the shutdown deadline. The legislation lasts until November 17th when Congress will need to consider approving the budget for the new fiscal year.
