The Greenfield Public Library will be hosting a presentation on a vital piece of Iowa’s World War II history.

The presentation will be given by Linda Betsinger McCann on the prisoner of war camps that were used in the state during the war. Algona and Clarinda were the two main camps, and held about 3,000 POWs, and there were 19 other smaller camps throughout the state. Prisoners stayed in the camps, and were hired to do work as farmhands, in canning factories, and many other jobs.

McCann has spoken with individuals in those 21 communities, who either knew or worked with the prisoners, and this presentation is her way of sharing those memories with others. The presentation will be held on Friday, October 6th beginning at 4pm, and McCann’s book “Prisoners of War in Iowa” will be available for purchase for $20.
