Members of Congress are scrambling to pass legislation that would fund the federal government, before a shut down at the end of the month.
The federal government runs out of money on October 1st which would mean some federal workers would have to work without pay until the shutdown ends. Congressman for Iowa’s Third District Zach Nunn says that shutting down the government would cause many families, farmers and troops to suffer all around the nation. Nunn adds they need to negotiate a way where the government doesn’t shut down, but holds spending accountable and doesn’t cut military pay, Iowan’s benefits, agriculture programs.
“Particularly the spending from this (Biden) administration. It has blasted out trillions of dollars, resulting in high, high inflation and interest rates that continue to increase. We have to do something that the House is leading on where both the Senate and the president have offered absolutely no solutions.”
House Republicans proposed a bill that would fund the government for another month, but cuts all spending except for the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affair, while enacting the HR2 border bill. Nunn says that HR2 would curve the increase in illegal immigration is affecting everyone from Texas to New York.
“Securing our southern border has to be part not just of our national security, but our long term strategy to get spending under control in Washington because we’re spending far more money trying to take care of the damage that’s done when people come across the southern border illegally than just preventing it in the first place.”
There has not been a government shutdown since 2019.
