The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has announced this coming June 6th through the 8th to be the state’s free fishing weekend, where residents may fish in waterways without a license.

dnrGuthrie County Conservation Board Director Joe Hanner is an avid fisherman, and while he certainly has his license, he encourages area residents to get out and take advantage of this great fishing opportunity.

“With society getting more active and people are more busy and stuff, sometimes we lose a little touch with the basics and how much fun you can have with the basics… fishing is a classic example.”

Hanner says the best part about free fishing weekend is the fact it can become a family affair, with parents and grandparents sharing what nature has to offer with the younger generation.

“Get (the kids) out, buy some nightcrawlers, keep it very simple with some small hooks, and get out to some public areas… or if you have a relative or know a neighbor or friend that has a farm pond that you can get permission to fish at, get out and fish and try to remember how much fun it is.”

If area residents have some fishing success this coming weekend, Hanner encourages people to trying filleting their catches.  He says Bluegills are a particularly good fish for a family meal.
