A new facility in Jefferson is celebrating this weekend with a ribbon cutting.

The Greene County Animal Shelter and Dog Park is having a public grand opening event on Sunday at 2pm. Don Orris has been working on this project for close to a decade and he says this new facility is working superbly well. The cats and dogs that are at the shelter have separate rooms, which allows for the animals to be calmer and easier for anyone looking to adopt them. He points out an example was earlier this year there were 11 cats in the shelter and within one week, nine were adopted.

Orris notes the new facility is also safer for volunteers, including not having to interact with the dogs when it comes to giving them food and water, as well as releasing them into and out of the dog runs.

The grand opening includes a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Jefferson Matters Ambassadors and some remarks from Orris about the project and the donors who made the shelter and the dog park a reality.
