After their scheduled opening meet for last Thursday got postponed due to heat, The Perry girls cross country team will officially open their season at Madrid on Thursday, August 31st in the Madrid Girls Cross Country Meet at Grant Woods Park. Madrid, Colo-Nesco, Woodward-Granger, Panorama, Woodward-Academy, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Ogden, and Perry are among the teams that will be participating in the meet.

I had a chance to ask head girls cross country coach Megan Maylum leading up to this week’s meet about the teams preparation for this upcoming season all throughout the summer. She said that during the summer, the girls established a base for the team’s cardiovascular endurance with practice on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Mondays and Wednesdays, the team ran with the Youth Running Club at Wiese Park. They increased their distance and intensity throughout the summer. She also said that they had a time trial to establish everyone’s initial 5k time that they will work on beating throughout the season. Maylum said the time trials looked great, and  she thinks the team will do great things this upcoming season.

Maylum also said she expects several medalists at this upcoming meet at Madrid. The gun is set to go off at 5:20 at Grant Woods Park. I will provide results as soon as I have them right here on KDLS and our website raccoonvalleyradio.com.
