The Perry Community School District will not have to worry about a breakfast meal for another year.
The Perry School Board approved the renewal of providing breakfast meals at no cost to students for the 2023-24 school year. Superintendent Clark Wicks says this was a decision they had to make even with the rising food and labor prices. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that a student is not capable of learning to their full potential with an empty belly.
“We all know that nutrition is a key thing for our brains as well as the rest of our body. And the more that the kids can have breakfast, a nutritious breakfast, the better off they’re going to be in the classroom. So anything we can do to help with kids in their learning and getting that nutrition, it’s going to be worth it.”
Wicks says they serve around 300 students in the morning for breakfast. He notes that an extra breakfast entrée will cost $1.50.
