Less than 10 years ago it was common for the Greene County softball varsity to play more than 30 games. The Rams played as many as 39 in a season, but mid-20’s is more the norm now. The 2023 Rams enter postseason play tomorrow night in Jefferson vs. Washington High of Cherokee with a 20-6 record and top 15 ranking in Class 3A from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Cherokee is 3-21.

Head coach Tom Kennedy has been at this a while and he talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about the difficulty in scheduling games. “I would like to get to a few more games. We upped them this year a little. We played 26 last year and we’re at 26 right now with the postseason to go, and we had a couple of gams rained out. It’s difficult to get more games with the umpire shortage, and we play two games now in Saturday tournaments instead of playing three like we used to.” Kennedy urged people to get certified to umpire high school softball as the umpire shortage is real.

Thursday night quarterfinal round softball between Cherokee and Greene County from the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway in Jefferson starts at 7 p.m. with coverage at 6:35 p.m.
