May is known as Iowa School Board recognition month.

It’s a time to highlight the volunteer members who serve on several school boards in Iowa.

“Educate! Advocate! Celebrate!” is this year’s theme for school board recognition month by the Iowa Association of School Boards.

Long-time school board member Sam Harding currently serves on the Jefferson-Scranton School Board and is the president of the Greene County School Board.  He explains why he continues to be on the Board after 21 years.

“Because 21 years ago I made a commitment to the kids in this district that they would get the best education that we could possibly afford to give them.  And I still think we’re not there for every kid yet.  And there’s things that we need to keep doing but until I tire of seeing the success of kids I’ll probably keep doing it.”

Jefferson-Scranton and East Greene School districts have been in a transition mode this year.  In July, both districts will combine to make the Greene County School District and Superintendent Tim Christensen appreciates be able to working smoothly with each school board every year and especially during the transitional time this year.

“I could not ask for two, three better school boards.  (I’m) extremely appreciative again of all the work and dedication and talking with them and working through things, they’ve been excellent to work with.”

Take time this month to thank all school board members for volunteering to help improve education for future generations.
