Jefferson was the site of Heart of Iowa Activities Conference baseball and softball on Friday vs. Perry. Varsity start times were moved up to 5:30 p.m. to try and beat predicted thunderstorms. :The rain never happened and the Blue Jays won the baseball game and the Rams took the softball contest.
Senior pitcher Emma Hoyle threw a no-hitter and freshman Becca Anderson hit a tie-breaking two-run homer as the Rams won 4-1 to improve to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. Maci Tunink pitched well, but took the loss for the Jayettes, who are 3-2 overall and in the HOIAC. Neither team had much traffic on the bases with the Jayettes totaling just three base runners, two via walks and one was hit with a pitch. The Rams had five base runners with four scoring. In addition to Anderson’s first career home run, freshman Kaycee Pittman had a pinch hit single and scored, and senior Olivia Shannon singled and scored in the first. Perry tied the game in the fourth with a walk, stolen base, and a SAC bunt scoring the run from second base. Anderson’s homer came with two outs in the fourth after the only error of the game put a runner on base. The Rams added another in the fifth to complete the scoring. Hoyle fanned 10 batters and now has 74 K’s in 45-plus innings.
Perry jumped out to an early 6-0 lead at Allensworth Field in Jefferson and won 10-3 to improve to 2-5 on the season and 2-4 in the HOIAC. The Rams dropped to 1-5 and 0-4. Greene County had five hits including two singles by Camden Jacobs, who took the pitching loss. Jacobs had a run batted in and Brayden Roberts doubled in two. The other Greene County hits were singles by Adam Bills and Isaac Carman. The Rams were charged with two errors and Perry had one.
Ram softball plays today at the Bondurant-Farrar Tournament at 10:45 a.m. vs. Mason City Newman, followed by a meeting with the host B-F Blue Jays.
Ram baseball plays twice today in the Boone Tournament with game one at the DMACC Campus field vs. Algona at 10 a.m. Game two is in Boone’s Memorial Park vs. the host Toreadors at approximately at 12:30 p.m.
