Two programs familiar with each other square off today in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A Boys’ State Soccer Tournament in Des Moines when sixth seeded Greene County faces third seeded Gilbert. The Rams are 0-4 All-Time vs. the Tigers with just one goal scored in those previous meetings. The 2023 Gilbert team is stingy as well, having allowed only six goals all season, a key reason for winning 18 of 20 matches.

Greene County has scored 88 goals while putting together a 13-4 record. They’ve been shut out just once all season and average more than five goals per match. Junior Gesser Gutierres leads all Class 2A players in goals scored this season with 42, and senior Jose Velazco has 20 goals. Greene County’s defense has also been good with only 22 goals given up in 17 contests.

State soccer coverage on KG98 and streaming on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com begins today just after 1 p.m. with start time set for 1:20 p.m. at the James Cownie Soccer Complex on the southeast side of Des Moines.
