Greene County and Perry played Heart of Iowa Activities Conference high school soccer on Tuesday night. The Jayettes won the girls’ match in Grand Junction at Karber Field by a 4-0 final and the Rams took the boys’ contest at Dewey Field in Perry, 3-2.
Perry improved to 3-6 while the Greene County girls fell to 0-7. The Jayettes led 2-0 at halftime behind goals from Pauline Galindo and Mia Munoz. Jennifer Ramos and Valeria Gomez had second half goals.
The boys went into the final minute tied 2-2 before the Rams’ Gesser Gutierres scored the game winning goal with 56 seconds remaining. Gutierres had all three Greene County goals and the hat trick puts him at 24 on the season, among the leading goal scores in all of Iowa boys’ high school soccer. Kolby Angell and Jack Hansen had assists for Greene County. The Rams led 1-0 in the first few minutes, but the Blue Jays led 2-1 at halftime. The Rams tied the score with :30.46 remaining and it stayed that way until just under one minute remained on the clock. The contest saw both teams ranked in Class 2A with the number 15 Rams now 8-1 and number 11 Perry falling to 4-4.
Carl Behne, head coach of the Greene County boys, told Raccoon Valley Radio, “The boys really played well the entire game, but the second half was our best overall half of soccer this year in a lot of ways.” The coach referred to goalkeeper Gabe Ebersole as a “rock” in stopping 15 shots, many of which could have been goals, the coach added, if not for his strong goal keeping instincts. “I’m proud of the effort and we can certainly build from this,” Behne concluded.
