With the weather getting warmer, it might be time to start thinking about home repairs.

Individuals and families in Greene and Guthrie counties who may not have the financial means to handle large scale repairs on their own can find help with Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity. Executive Director Ron Christensen says they are accepting applications now for owner-occupied homes in need of external repairs, through their Helping Hands program.

Christensen points out the Helping Hands program partners a homeowner with Habitat volunteers to replace a roof, as well as painting, new siding, a wheelchair ramp, window or door replacements, gutters and downspouts, among other types of repairs. With the Helping Hands program, homeowners are required to put in sweat equity, as they do the work right alongside Habitat volunteers. Additionally, if a homeowner can’t physically help do the work, they can volunteer with other organizations.

Homeowners needing internal repairs have an option with Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity to qualify for a US Department of Agriculture Rural Development Loan to offset the cost of the repairs.
