The Greene County School Board will hold a public hearing at their regular meeting later this month on the proposed tax levy rate for next school year.

Superintendent Brett Abbotts tells Raccoon Valley Radio the district is proposing an overall tax levy rate of $14.31 per $1,000 of property valuation, which is a decrease of $0.11 compared to the current fiscal year. He describes one important aspect for taxpayers to keep in mind.

“One of the things that I really try to emphasize to both our (School) Board and to our community members is the continued effort that we are making to decrease that total burden on our taxpayers. Back in 2019(-20) school year when we added our debt service levy there, to pay for the high school and the updates to the middle school, we have been actively decreasing that over these past five years and we’re going to continue to do so again next year.”

The overall tax levy rate is made up of property taxes, debt service levy, the voter-approved physical plant and equipment levy, as well as state aid funding. The proposed tax levy rate is the fourth lowest compared to the other school districts in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. The public hearing will be held on Wednesday, April 19th at 5:15pm.
