A member of congress has introduced a bill that hopes to put constituents over a personal profit.
Iowa’s Third District Representative Zach Nunn has announced a new piece of legislation called “Ban Members from Becoming Lobbyist Act,” which looks to triple the length of the current lobbying ban for Members of Congress and Senators. Nunn says that under this bill, the cooling off period between public service and lobbying would be longer from one to three years for Representatives and from two to six years for Senators. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that a longer ban for lobbying would help ensure Members of Congress aren’t acting in their best interest.
“I think this is something that I’m actually happy that has got both Republicans and Democrats who have been there for a very long time, frustrated because maybe they need to reevaluate why they went to Washington in the first place. I won’t ask them why they’re so upset about that, Bill. I will be very clear while I’m so passionate about this bill because it’s the right thing to do for the American people.”
Under current U.S. law, Members of the House of Representatives are banned from lobbying for one year and Senators are banned from lobbying for two years after leaving office. Nunn says that lobbying is the single most popular post Congress career choice for politicians. The full text of the bill can be read here.
