In less than two weeks high school track & field performers will find out who qualified for the 2023 Drake Relays in Des Moines. The prestigious event blends high school, college and university, and professional athletes at Drake Stadium later this month. As of this writing, there are a couple events from Greene County that are among the would-be qualifiers, but performances can be submitted until 8 a.m. April 21 for consideration. Drake Relays determine how many qualifiers there are per event and the Relays host most, but not all, of the 19 girls and 19 boys events.

The most liberal event Drake allows for the number of entries is the 4 x 100 meter dash with 96 quartets allowed. Through April 7 on the statistical website Bound Iowa, the Greene County girls in the 4 x 100 sat at number 46 in 52.43 seconds with seniors Olivia Shannon, Kamryn Sanders, Katrina Heupel and Natalie Heupel.

Through April 7 the Greene County boys are 99th in the 4 x 100 at 46.00.

There are other events, especially on the girls’ side, that still have opportunities to qualify for the 2023 Drake Relays.
