DC-Grimes Maya Fritz was a stand out on the wrestling mat as she finished eighth at state tournament and now she is bringing that toughness to the pitch.

Fritz has been thriving as the goalie for Dallas Center-Grimes girls soccer team as she is second in saves in the Little Hawkeye Conference with 14 already in this young season. Head Coach Dan James says that Fritz is the ultimate competitor which rubs off on her teammates.

“I mean, she’s just got that grit and that determination that you want out of all your kids there as well. And so, I mean, yeah, she had some success there wrestling this year as well. But I think that just shows a little bit about I mean, some of our girls mindset. I mean, they’re willing to get in there, do those dirty things and get in those tough matches that they’ve been in there before. So it just competitive. It creates more competitive with the team. And you can see that in our practices today. Now, this is one of the most competitive groups. I mean, they don’t take it easy on each other in practice. And I think that’s what makes this team.”

Fritz also finished the 2022 season with over 100 saves and led the Mustangs to a state championship. DC-Grimes first conference game on Tuesday got postponed due to weather conditions and will face off against Dowling Catholic on Thursday.
