The 2023 Greene County High School golf seasons are set to begin today vs. Carroll High. The girls host the Tigers at 4 p.m. west of Grand Junction at The Hill while the boys play against the Tigers northwest of Carroll at the Breda Golf Course.

The coaching staff looks different than it did a season ago when Heath Telleen coached the boys and Josh Carlson was coaching the girls. For the second time in his tenure here, Telleen is the girls’ coach and for the first time, Kyle Kinne is coaching golf as the boys’ coach.

Carlson still teaches at Greene County High School, but he stepped away from coaching. Originally, Kinne looked at coaching the girls, but Telleen’s daughter, a high school freshman, decided to go out for golf, so he switched back to girls and Kinne accepted the boys’ job. Telleen has a rebuilding job in front of him as numbers dwindled to just three a season ago and there were times when just one or two played in meets. Coach Telleen reports six girls out for golf and he’s hoping to build on that number.

Kinne has 16 boys out, so fielding both a varsity and JV should be doable. The Rams have some athletes participating in more than one Spring sport at the same time, most notably junior Jack Hansen, the top returning Ram golfer who is also a starter on the soccer pitch.
