A Paton-Churdan student recently won a writing contest.

Fourth grader Mason Fiedler earned first place from the Greene County Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary essay contest on “What is Your Favorite Patriotic Holiday and Why?” Fiedler tells Raccoon Valley Radio he chose Memorial Day as his favorite patriotic holiday and describes some of what he wrote about in his essay.

“I said that we have to remember about all the people that fought for us and when the next Memorial Day maybe you could go to a cemetery and put flowers on all the veterans (graves) that served.”

Fiedler won $100 from the VFW Auxiliary, which he says he’s never won that much money before. Fiedler gives this advice to his fellow classmates and urges them to participate in the contest in future years.

“I would probably just say like try your best, try to get all of the spelling errors (corrected) and stuff, and then maybe research some stuff about which patriotic holiday you want to write about, and then just try your best.”

The check presentation was made on March 10th at Paton-Churdan School.
