Greene County’s girls and boys soccer teams both began the 2023 season last night. The boys hosted Boone at Karber Field in Grand Junction while the girls faced Grand View Christian at the Cownie Soccer Complex on the southeast side of Des Moines. Greene County has a sharing program in soccer with Paton-Churdan.
The Rams won 6-0 vs. Boone with junior Gesser Gutierres scoring the first five goals and freshman Teagan Chisholm recording the sixth. Assists were registered by Gutierres, Chisholm, Jack Hansen, Chad Maston, and Landon Carstens. Gabe Ebersole in goal stopped three shots and the Rams recorded a shut out of the Torreadores for the second straught season. Greene County lead 3-0 at the half.
Carl Behne is the head boys’ coach of the Rams. He told Raccoon Valley Radio, “Overall, a strong opening night for the Rams. Proud of the effort, communication, and passing. We had great minutes from many players including some that didn’t get on the score sheet such as Mylo Taute and Cody McCollom. Our defense played well and we are starting to gel as a unit.”
Greene County’s girls lost 3-2 to the Thunder despite two goals by junior Esther Van Horn. C.C. Cunningham had an assist. The Rams rarely scored two goals in a single match a season ago, so getting on the scoreboard twice was a positive.
