Leadership is expected to be a strength area for the 2023 Greene County High School girls’ track & field squad. Derek Merk’s team has more than 30 girls on it and one-third of those are seniors. Olivia Shannon is the lone State Meet place winner on the Greene County team, but others have State Meet experience. Shannon placed seventh in the Class 2A 200 meter dash in 2022 and she talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about the upcoming outdoor season. “I have a few different goals set for this season to keep me improving.”
She added comments about the experience the Rams have and how that can help the confidence of the team. “I think that’s one of the really good things instead of having to rebuild. We have a lot of the same girls returning, so we can all work on ourselves getting better, which will help the team. There’s some really good opportunities and potential for our relays and individual events this season.”
The Rams are scheduled to open the outdoor season on March 27 in Jefferson at Linduska Field for the Greene County Early Bird at 4:30 p.m. Contact the high school Activities Office if interested in volunteering to help at any track & field meet the Rams host.
