The Iowa High School Athletic Association recently announced preliminary classifications for the 2023 and 2024 football seasons.

After adopting a new formula that subtracts 40% of a school district’s free and reduced lunch number from their Basic Educational Data Survey numbers, that has resulted in some teams dropping down a class. Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Activities Director Rod Wiebers says that with their district’s growth and enrollment they knew they would stay at the Class 4A level for football.

“Numbers came out as far as the classification. We’re kind of right there towards the middle or the bottom half of 4A. But as I said, we’re going to continue to grow. But the amount of kids we currently have in our building compared to the schools that are at the top of 4A, there’s still a large difference between that. So I think we’ll be firmly locked into the 4A level for a number of years.”

Wiebers says they have roughly 26-percent of their students using the free and reduced lunch program. ADM will be Class 4A District 5 with other schools like Ballard, Boone, Des Moines North, Indianola and North Polk.
