A number of changes are being made by the Iowa High School Athletic Association in the sport of football. Among those is reclassification for the 2023 and ’24 seasons using enrollment figures, along with a socioeconomic formula figuring the percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Greene County is the largest Class 2A program in football, which it shares with Paton-Churdan.
Caden Duncan is head coach of the Rams and he told Raccoon Valley Radio the Athletic Association will have its own rankings for programs in Class 2A and smaller, but 3A and bigger will continue to use RPI (Ratings Percentage Index). “I don’t know what week the rankings will begin, cut once it starts it will be every week, similar to what was implemented this year in basketball.”
The 2A class still has 48 football programs and 32 qualify for the playoffs. There will continue to be eight regular season games for 2A and smaller and nine games in the regular season for 3A and larger.
