The Iowa High School Athletic Association recently announced preliminary classifications for the 2023 and 2024 football seasons.

After adopting a new formula that subtracts 40% of a school district’s free and reduced lunch number from their Basic Educational Data Survey numbers, that has resulted in some teams dropping down a class. This change will impact some of the school districts in Guthrie County.

West Central Valley will remain in Class 1A, as one of the upper middle teams on the list, while Adair – Casey / Guthrie Center and Panorama will drop to Class A, with both not very far from the top of that class list. Football is the only sport that the state sets the schedule for, instead of the school districts, so the change in classification will change up some of the teams that teams may face in games.
