The Guthrie County Secondary Roads Department has had an interesting time in the last month.
Spring is on its way, but winter weather has been showing up about once a week. Guthrie County Engineer Josh Sebern says that the crews have been having an interesting time trying to decide what weather to prepare for. When asked how the department is preparing for warmer weather, he replied with some humor.
“Well that’s a good question. We’re still waiting for that warmer weather. This year has certainly been a challenge as we continue to see these heavy snowfalls mixed with melting temperatures and then cold along with it. And then we get rain, and the wide variety of weather we’re seeing is tough. So we’re eagerly anticipating the warmer weather, but we also have to be ready for these cold snows. So it’s kind of like we’re trying to fight with both hands tied behind our back right now.”
Sebern mentions that because of the intermittent cold spells, the department has been unable to take the sand spreaders off of their plow trucks, because it takes a good chunk of time to get them on and off. This can cause some issues when they need to spread rock though, as these are the same trucks that would go out to put rock down.
