The Greene County School Board met Wednesday night in regular session.

During open forum, Jefferson resident Daniel Cunningham addressed the Board. He explained part of his educational and professional background dealt with identifying behaviors in people and after subbing within the school district he chose to submit a letter of resignation to the Board. Cunningham stated that the last time he subbed for a seventh grade classroom, he used criteria from a study that resulted in about 62-percent of the students exhibiting behaviors that were disruptive to the learning environment. The Board didn’t comment following Cunningham’s prepared statement.

The Board then commended two retiring staff members for their years of service to the district, including pre-kindergarten teacher Linda Henning for 13 years and 18 total years in the district, as well as middle school principal Shawn Zanders for his ten years.

The Board also approved the second reading of a new board policy for stock prescription medication supply so that school nurses could administer narcan for opioid overdoses. Additionally, they approved one school driving permit for Addison Walker, one early graduation request for Regan Tuhn and one fundraiser request for the FCCLA group to sell Easter eggs.

The Board then approved the 2023-24 negotiated agreement with the Greene County Education Association with an increase in base pay to $33,888 and a total cost to the district of $291,310 for a 3.49-percent overall package increase. The Board also approved a special consideration for Annette Coil to be on sick leave, due to health issues, that her salary be reduced to substitute teacher pay because she used up all of her sick leave.

Next, the Board approved bowling as an extracurricular activity, an Area Education Agency purchasing agreement as presented, the first reading of a revised board policy to increase the probationary period for any new teachers to the district or new teachers to the profession to two years, and set public hearings for the 2022-23 budget amendment and the 2023-24 certified budget for April 19th at 5:15pm. The meeting ended in a closed session for a performance review.
