The indoor track & field season is underway for Greene County and the boys’ team, under the direction of head coach Chad Morton is hoping to continue a strong tradition in the sport. The 800 meter run hasn’t been a strength area very often in the dozen years the Rams have competed as Greene County, but there could be reason for optimism. Freshman Drew Wolterman was timed in 2:11.52 on Tuesday night indoors at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls at the boys’ portion of the A.D. Dickinson Relays hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. Wolterman finished 26th among 200 runners and he was the second fastest freshman in the field, trailing only Class 4A’s Zak Shlomi of Waukee Northwest.

The UNI-Dome’s track is 200 meters in length while outdoor tracks are 400 meters long. Typically, times go down outdoors as conditioning for athletes improves along with the bigger tracks. Warmer weather as the season goes along also can improve performances. Even though it’s one performance in early March, Wolterman’s performance could be a sign of better things to come.
