The Iowa Legislature moved quickly to correct a property tax issue.
House District 47 Representative Carter Nordman tells Raccoon Valley Radio a bill that was previously passed in the legislature caused an unintended property tax issue with the Department of Revenue. He says the problem was that some residential properties were mixed with multi-residential properties, which Nordman believes would’ve caused Iowans to pay over $100 million in additional property taxes.
“So it was just an overstatement and I believe it was about like two-percent more money that the cities believe that they were going to get, but actually was never there. That’s what the fix was all about.”
Nordman points out this bill had to get through the Legislature quickly.
“This passed the House and the Senate with bipartisan support, again for the mistake made by state government and we were not going to let that mistake fall back on property taxpayers.”
Nordman adds the deadline for local governments to certify their budgets to the state has been extended to April 30th, due to this correction in the tax code.
