A Callender woman faces two felony charges for an alleged January incident.

According to court documents, 40-year-old Jason Pirie won a $1,972 jackpot on a slot machine from Wild Rose Casino in Jefferson on January 18th. Court documents show Pirie left the machine and 59-year-old Shelli Larson of Callender sat down at Pirie’s machine and claimed the winnings by filling out an IRS W-9 form, to certify under penalty of perjury.

The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) agent that was assigned to the state-ran casino reviewed the surveillance video footage, and it was determined that Pirie won the jackpot. Court documents show that when Pirie’s information was run through the Iowa Department of Administrative Services Offset Program, he owed $19,000. The jackpot winnings were applied to his debts with the program.

The DCI agent spoke with Larson and Pirie and Pirie admitted he knew he owed money to the state and asked Larson, his mother, to claim the jackpot. Larson told DCI that the casino would take all of the winnings, which is why she claimed the jackpot.

Larson was arrested last week and charged with two Class D Felonies for second degree fraudulent practice and gambling-avoid offset. She was booked into the Greene County Jail.
