Governor Kim Reynolds has set a goal to end a state collected tax in the future. 

Governor Reynolds has made a proposal in a conservative podcast to abolish state income taxes in Iowa by the end of her term in 2026. Reynolds has previously passed bills reducing state income tax and eliminating state income taxes on retirement income like 401K’s in 2022. 

State Senator for District 14 Sarah Trone-Garriott has concerns about cutting half of the state budget’s revenue that comes from income taxes which supports public education and other vital services. 

“We’ve got to invest in our people here in this state. We’ve got to maintain our roads and bridges. We’re at the bottom of the list in the country for our roads and bridges. They’re not safe. We want our schools to be the best. And unfortunately, we’ve been slipping and slipping down those rankings because we just haven’t been putting our money where our heart should be.”

Trone-Garriott says she is afraid the state will raise other taxes like the sales tax which is hard on working families to make up the revenue for not having state income taxes.
