Greene County 4-H Sheep And Goat Weigh-Ins Is Today

All Greene County 4-H and FFA’ers who are planning on show sheep, goat and lamb at this year’s county fair must attend the weigh-ins today in Jefferson.

Greene County ISU Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Sarah Jo Reynolds says the weigh-ins will be from 7:30-10:30am at the fairgrounds.  She adds that all market lambs and goats must be weighed in and tagged for the county fair and each youth is allowed up to ten market lambs.

The Greene County Lamb Producers are once again covering the cost of each sheep ear tag this year.  Goat exhibitors must pay $1.50 per ear tag.

Once the weigh-ins are complete, Reynolds urges all participants to verify the information by May 15th to be eligible to show at county fair by going to your 4-H online account.

Greene County Impact Award Ceremony On Sunday

The ceremony for the Greene County Impact Award is tomorrow in Jefferson.

This year’s recipient is Doug Hawn from Scranton.

Committee member Jerry Roberts says the award is given to an individual or a group of individuals whose work contributes to the county and is recognized by community members.

Hawn serves on the Greene County Fair Board, the Greene County Medical Center’s Board of Trustees, the Law Enforcement Center and the Bell Tower Festival.

Roberts notes that the official ceremony will be at 3pm tomorrow in the south rotunda of the Greene County Courthouse in Jefferson.  The public is invited to attend with a reception to follow the ceremony.
Grand Junction Fire Chief Resigns

It was announced earlier this week at a Grand Junction City Council meeting that the City’s Fire Chief Mark Renslow resigned from the department.

It was a result from allegations made by an individual through an email accusing the former fire chief of misappropriating funds.

City Clerk Rita Jenkins says the email is bogus and that the address isn’t registered to an existing person.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says a formal investigation will be led by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.  He points out that after a conversation between Chief Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams and County Attorney Nick Martino, they felt it best to have a third-party, unbiased investigation conducted since the sheriff’s office works closely with the City as the main law enforcement agency.

Renslow was appointed chief of the department last March and Haupert adds that acting assistant chief Tim Fester will be named as interim fire chief pending approval from Mayor Gerald Herrick.

All bike rides are free and open to the public and Offenburger recommends that you wear a helmet to each event.

He notes that there will also be a bicycle safety check for individuals under the age of 18 on Sunday, May 4th from 1-5pm at All Ability Cycles in Jefferson.  Free services offered include bike examinations, adjustments, tire inflation and helmet fitting.  Offenburger adds that if someone needs new parts, then they will have to pay.
