Five people were inducted into the Greene County Athletic Hall of Fame Thursday evening in the high school auditorium. 

This year’s induction class included two brothers for baseball, a track star, an NFL standout and special consideration as a contributor through the airwaves for radio. Football player Bryce Paup was a 1986 Scranton High School graduate, who went to the University of Northern Iowa where he was named to the All-Gateway Conference in 1989 and third team All-American honors. He was picked by the Green Bay Packers in the 1990 NFL draft. He made the pro bowl in 1994. Then in 1995, when he played for the Buffalo Bills, Paup was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and was also All-Pro and a Pro Bowler. He retired after the 2000 season. Paup talked about self-belief to make your future what you want it to be.

“I came from the smallest division (in high school) in the state of Iowa (and) I had one offer and that was from Northern Iowa. You have to have one person believe in you and that’s it. Most of the time that’s you, and if you don’t believe in you, how is anybody else going to believe in you?”

Jefferson resident Doug Rieder, of Raccoon Valley Radio, was inducted as a contributor and the “Voice of the Rams” since 1979. Emcee and Greene County Schools Activities Director Dave Wright said that Rieder is a walking encyclopedia of Greene County sports knowledge. Rieder talked about what this honor meant for him and his broadcasting career.

“I was shocked when I was told. It just means so much because this is my home. Since 1979, I met Sue (my wife) here and my stepsons Ryan and Brent (MacLagan) grew up here, were students and athletes here, and then so many teachers and coaches have been friends of mine for decades. It was a big surprise and it is, I think without a doubt, the greatest honor of my career.”

Mark and Kelley Lane graduated from Jefferson-Scranton in 1991 and ‘98, respectively. Each played high school baseball where left-handed pitcher Mark was a two-time first team all state player in 1990 and ‘91 by the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association and garnered 452 strikeouts and compiled a 33-10 pitching record. Kelly was a first team all-stater by the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association and the Iowa Newspaper Association in 1998. 

Allison Drewry graduated from Jefferson-Scranton High School in 1994 and was part of the 1994 Class 2A girls state track champions. Earlier that year, she was also the Drake Relays champion in the 100-meter dash against all high school classes.
