Several Greene County and Paton-Churdan students are preparing for tomorrow’s Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group contest.
Greene County Sophomore Hailey Carman is competing in reader’s theater called “Snow Sort of White” with a different take on the traditional Snow White story. She describes her reaction when her group qualified for state from districts that was held on January 21st.
“I was pretty excited and I think the rest of my group was too. We were a little surprised because none of us had ever been in speech before. So I think we’re pretty excited to go to state for the first time.”
Senior Allee Hinote is involved in choral reading and radio broadcasting. She talks about some of the challenges with rehearsals with five other girls in choral reading, including one unique obstacle.
“I would say the hardest part has been the snow days. There’s been so many snow days that we’ve been snowed out, like we were supposed to practice on Saturday at like 9am, but the snow made it a little risky, so we decided to cancel practice.”
Greene County is sending five events including reader’s theater, choral reading, radio broadcasting, short film, and ensemble acting. Paton-Churdan has one event with reader’s theater heading to the state contest that is tomorrow at Waukee High School.
