A few notable hunting seasons are coming to a close.

The end of Quail, Furbearer and Squirrel hunting seasons is Tuesday. Iowa Department of Natural Resource Officer for Dallas County Dustin Eighmy says that hunters didn’t see much success with quail hunting in Dallas County so many headed south in the state. Eighmy explains the harvest numbers for quail this season.

“We kind of are looking good this year, doubled from last year on our statewide survey that we typically do every year in August. So it was showing good numbers. Like I said, it just kind of depends on the snowfall across southern Iowa, which led to a higher overwinter survival last year.”

He also states that furbearer and trapping season’s popularity has really died off because of the declining fur prices.

“Fur-bear hunting as far as bobcats and coyotes go, and those things with guns because of the use of thermal scopes and so that popularity has come back out with people out hunting at nighttime with those thermal scopes. But the traditional trapping has been declining over the years. But I foresee that in the future, coming back up, it just kind of goes up and down, just depending on the market.”

Eighmy says that the people still looking to hunt can check out the rabbit season that will last until February 28th with a daily limit of 10 and crow season will last until March 31st with no limit.
