The Education Committee isn’t taking a break after passing the Education Savings Account bill.

There are some bills that have been proposed that may be making their way to the committee before the end of session. One bill would prohibit lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation in kindergarten through 3rd grade, and the other would require a school to notify a parent before accommodating their transgendered child. Iowa House District 23 Representative Ray Sorensen tells Raccoon Valley Radio his view on the bills.

“So I believe the goal of those bills is simply just to put parents back in the driver’s seat. For me, ultimately, teachers should teach, and parents should parent. Too often we’re seeing examples of school employees spending their energy trying to parent these children and teach them on these social topics. And the parents that I’ve been talking to, they send their kids to public school for their kids to learn math, science, reading and writing, not to teach gender identity and sexuality.”

Sorensen adds that he believes the same concept is true with the Parent Notification bill, and that open communication with parents will always be best and beneficial for children.
