A cabin that was used over 75 times last year in its inaugural season is now open for the entire summer and fall season today.
Cottonwood cabin at Spring Lake Park in Greene County opened for the first time last year and generated quite a buzz according to County Conservation Director Dan Towers.
He says the double-loft, four-bed with a full kitchenette and ¾-bathroom cabin was something that was needed for the 240-acre state park.
“We saw all the other counties have been so successful and with Spring Lake providing so much for families to do with the concessionaire that has a skating rink, the boat rentals, the beach concession; there’s just a lot for families to do there. The families that used the cabin last year that’s their comment. They don’t own campers and they don’t like to tent camp so these cabins are an ideal fit.”
Right now, Spring Lake Park offers the public a chance to hike the wooded trails and bike on the paved routes along with fishing in the lake.
And with the second cabin called Sycamore set to open by Memorial Day weekend, Towers hopes that these new additions will generate more money for the county.
“It could be looked at as a revenue-maker. The other counties that we’ve talked to say they’ve had about a five-year payback period and after that then all the revenue generated goes into the county funds so we hope to follow the same course as all the other counties have.”
Towers adds that there is a $75 per night with a two night minimum fee for the cabins and to make a reservation, contact him at the conservation office at 386-5674.
