Last week may have been a turning point in the Greene County boys’ varsity basketball season. Time will tell if that’s the case, but two close come-from-behind road wins in a four day stretch put the season record at 7-8 and Heart of Iowa Activities Conference mark at 6-4 with six regular season games left on the schedule including four conference contests.
Coach Chris Nelson’s team is playing for an elusive winning season and a high finish in the HOIAC, neither of which would still be likely without strong fourth quarters in winning 63-59 at Jewell vs. South Hamilton on Jan. 17 and 54-51 on Jan. 20 in Monroe vs. PCM. In both cases, Greene County trailed going into the last quarter, but 25 points in the fourth vs. SH and 18 in the last period vs. PCM carried the Rams to victory. Strong defensive play and rebounding were also key contributors.
The Rams play just once this week when they host West Marshall (State Center) in the high school gym in Jefferson on Friday as part of a girl/boy doubleheader. The Rams used a 31 point third quarter to pull away from the Trojans in State Center last month in the first meeting between the two.
