A unique animal has been spotted in Jefferson.
The red fox has been seen in the City and Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says the animal doesn’t pose a threat to humans.
“Several people have said that it’ll walk by within three or four feet on them in their backyard or lay on someone’s deck or something like that and that doesn’t mean it’s going to attack or become aggressive or anything it just has no fear of people.”
The animal was in the City last year and they trapped the young and took them out to the countryside, but Towers adds that they have no plans of doing that this time unless there is an increasing number of concerns.
“I’ve been telling people just appreciate seeing them. There’s a lot of people that would love to see a fox from time to time. They’re a beautiful animal really and a chance to see is something that everyone can enjoy.”
Towers doesn’t recommend feeding the foxes since they are a wild animal.
He doesn’t see an increasing number of foxes in the future, but points out that since they aren’t seen as a threat to humans, that they will leave them alone.
Towers notes that the public doesn’t have to notify him or the police department if they see the animal because they are already aware of it, but only notify them if the animal behaves aggressively to you.
